Discrete Industry: Make to Order

One of the standard processes in Supply Chain is the make to order. The process is used to produce products to unique specifications of the customer. The customer order triggers the manufacturing process. For such products it is difficult to accurately forecast customer demand to initiate production based on forecast and the customer is ready for longer order fulfillment times.

 

Usually planning in the MTO process is made on the level of non-customer specific assemblies/components, similar to the planning at assembly level process. In fact planning at this level with high accuracy is very important to reduce the delivery time of the customer specific product. With demand planning on assembly level and multi-level-ATP check in APO 3.1, the accuracy of promised delivery time (service level) can be improved.

 

It is possible in this process to plan for all the components requirements for individual customer requirements. There is a constant link between the sales order and the production order. This leads to the tracking of the progress on the customer order. The quality tests can be specific to the customer and the material stock is seen as customer stock.  

 

The primary benefits of this process are the ability to track the progress for the sales order and the flexibility to offer to the customer the products to meet their specific requirements. The benefit also lies in tracking the costs incurred in the servicing of the sales order in the manufacturing of the goods and the ability of arrive at a profitability of the sales order.
